Conformal Mapping Applet Introduction
Conformal mapping is regularly omitted from both undergraduate
and graduate courses in electromagnetism because:
- It requires a lengthy mathematical development heavy in complex variables.
- It is limited to two-dimensional solutions.
- Having obtained a solution, it is often extremely difficulty to visualize
in one's mind.
At the same time, conformal mapping is an excellent tool for providing
intellectual and visual connections to between equipotential surfaces
and field lines for a wide variety of complex geometries.
The Conformal Mapping Applet was developed to be usable
either as a simple
visualizer for two-dimensional fields and potentials or as a very
convenient interactive visualization tool to be used in conjunction with
the study of conformal mapping.
The Conformal Mapping Applet is still under development. It is
functional, but the documentation has not been completed. In particular,
use of the parser to produce user defined conformal maps requires an
extensive help menu. It is recommended that the reviewer
choose from the menu of predefined maps and, if desired, experiment
with the parser to generate user-defined maps.
